Moving abroad is always exciting, but it can be stressful. It is totally different from planning any international travel, no matter how big. And it doesn’t matter if you’re thinking about migration or will be living overseas for a shorter period. An international removals company will help ship your goods, but there are some actions that you have to take on your own.
Let’s look at eight things you must do before moving abroad.
1. Money
Whether you plan to close your bank account or transfer your money, check Five Ways to Make the Most of Your Currency Transfer on our blog.
If you want to keep a UK bank account while living abroad, change its type to reduce monthly fees.
2. Council Tax
You should inform your local Council that you are leaving.
Simply fill out the form on their website, and give them all details and dates. They will prepare your final Council Tax statement, so you don’t have to pay more than you need.
3. Revenue
You must tell HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) if you’re either:
Do that through your Self Assessment tax return. If you don’t usually complete a Self Assessment tax return, simply complete this online form.

4. Pension
You can quickly transfer your current pension scheme when moving to a country with social security agreements with the UK. Always check before you go.
You can also make voluntary National Insurance contributions while paying social security abroad. These payments will protect your State Pension whether you choose to return to the UK or stay living abroad.
Contact HMRC for further advice.
5. TV and Internet
Tell your provider about the date so you won’t get cut off too soon.
Usually, you will also need to arrange the equipment's return (modem and TV box) to avoid paying an extra fee.
6. Gas, electricity and water
You can do all of the above online and after your migration. It’s straightforward, but there is one crucial thing you have to remember.
Take final readings from all your meters at the very last moment. It will make your closing bill as accurate as it can be.
7. Mobile phone
Do you want to keep the UK number when living overseas?
Change your monthly plan for a cheaper one, or switch to a pay-as-you-go tariff. If you are in the middle of your agreement, it may be expensive to terminate it. Sometimes it's better to wait until the end of the term.
Contact your provider to discuss your options.
8. Declutter
Decide what to take with you.
Sell, donate to charity or take your stuff straight to the recycling centre – but give yourself plenty of time to complete this task. You will be surprised by how many things you have but never use.
